Welcome
to Old Bolingbroke Church
St Peter & St Paul is a beautiful Grade 2 listed building, situated in the heart of the Old Bolingbroke conservation area, directly opposite Bolingbroke Castle and nestling at the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds.
Bolingbroke was the birthplace of King Henry lV, whose father John of Gaunt is credited in some quarters with the re-building of the present church around 1363, though rebuilding may have happened earlier in the 1340’s – Alice de Lacey. The Domesday book mentions the existence of a church here as early as 1088.
We warmly welcome all visitors to our open church, whether you are passing through on a cycling or walking tour, visiting specially to spend time discovering our history, stories & church architecture or to enjoy the tranquillity of our rural churchyard.

Keep readingIf you appreciate our work, please consider making a donation. We are a small local charity and we receive no external funding, yet we have ambitious plans for new facilities, exhibitions, events and churchyard interpretation. John of Gaunt’s special church requires significant help. Thank you.
The church was once much larger and what you mainly see now is simply the original south aisle, the original nave and north aisle being destroyed in 1643, when the church was caught between royalist and parliamentarian troops during the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell being only a few miles away at the Battle of Winceby.
The church strives to be a Christian presence at the heart of our community – why not come along to one of our services, always preceded by the ringing of the bells – come and watch!
If you can’t visit us regularly, you can still keep in touch with us. Become a friend of St Peter & St Paul by signing up for our occasional email newsletters.
We are part of the Diocese of Lincoln in the Church of England, but we welcome people of all backgrounds. We are also part of a group of churches known as the Marden Hill cluster in the Deanery of Bolingbroke. If you like visiting us, it is well worth exploring them as well.
